Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie. One Ring to rule them all. One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie. -J.R.R. Tolkien |
I first read The Lord of the Rings in 1973 and have been a devoted fan ever since. When my daughter was in 2nd grade (or there abouts) I read The Hobbit and the trilogy to her over a period of months. It is the only set of books I have ever personally read to her in its entirety. Ever since then she has been as big of a Tolkien fan as I am. This is another reason for me to love the story. Personally, I thought the first movie was great. I had waited 28 years for it to be produced and yes I could nitpick it to pieces, yet I don't know how I could have done any better myself without making the movie any longer than it already is. It is a vast tale of a mystical time when people shared the world with elfs, dwarfs, wizards, orcs, trolls, and even hobbits. It has vast battles, giant underground caverns, heroic characters, magical rings, devoted love, treachery, betrayal, you name it and it is probably in the story somewhere. There has probably not been a fantasy tale written in the last 40 years that is not indebted to Tolkien. Yeah... I guess you could say I like the story. |
